lightcube - Exchange Island - Skelmersdale is a wow of light. Shifting patterns and colours of light create a constantly changing spectacle. Situated on a major roundabout in Skelmersdale, lightcube is a stainless steel structure, 7 metres high. 2400 fibre-optic light points create an intense illuminated cubic surface in the top two metres of the sculpture. A sophisticated computer program controls 8 fibre-optic light sources. Lightcube changes colour and sparkles but has hidden surprises, it turns special colours on special days, it sparkles pink on Valentines day. lightcube was commissioned by West Lancs District Council in 2001 as part of the Elements project.
