Casting Out - Newlyn Harbour Lights - Christmas 2002

Casting Out was a project on home ground. The Newlyn harbour lights are an annual event and have given me a lot of joy over the last nine years. As part of the project 'Casting Out ' organised by the Newlyn Art Gallery I was asked to create a new light piece to add to the Harbour Lights.

The overall project dealt with an idea of local history and changing role of fishing in Newlyn.
Cornwall is a wonderful place to live but there are many difficult changes to the traditional industries. After talking to organisers of the lighting and people in Newlyn, my ideas developed into creating a funky upbeat beacon. It was evisaged as a forward looking and optimistic symbol to the future regeneration of the town.
The sculpture uses the richest colours of flourescent tubing onto a scaffold structure. The sculpture was launched with strobes, smoke machines and a laser show.
